We just had a feeling that 2009 was a screaming success, and to our delight, the numbers confirm it! We’re thrilled to report that our festivals’ attendance was up more than 10% over the previous year, on top of steady attendance growth each of the 4 seasons prior, for a nearly 40% spike in just 5 years! More importantly, NWE raised more than $25,000 for local charities, including the RI Community Food Bank, Hugs & Halos, the Autism Project of Rhode Island, the Potter League for Animals, McAuley House, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. We could prattle on, but the bottom line is that 2009 was a wildly successful and rewarding season, and we owe every bit of it to you: our guests, fans, neighbors and friends who keep returning year after year. We thank you all for your invaluable support, and we’re ready to do it all again in oh-10! Mark your calendars for this year’s events!
As our more loyal e-friends may have noticed, the new decade has ushered in an exciting new era for NWE, as evidenced by a handsome new web design and a renewed zeal for delivering you the latest news, insider gossip, event photos, and exclusive offers from camp NWE. We’re a tight-knit bunch, and we’re bringing you all into the loop with our revamped online community! We’ve got a reorganized website with new graphics, a streamlined design and an improved social community to keep you abreast of the latest NWE happenings and offers. We’ve made it even simpler to share your musings, fuzzy memories, and constructive suggestions with the whole gang. And, most importantly, we’ve got a fresh new summer 2010 lineup to start getting giddy about. So mark up your calendars and join us online - let’s get the buzz going!
After 31 days of selfless philanthropy, the annual Amica Coat Drive at the Sovereign Bank Family Skating Center has drawn to a close, and we’d like to sincerely thank all those who donated and helped to make the drive a smashing success. But there’s another call for charity taking place right now: From January 29 through February 26, the city of Newport is again rolling out the annual “Ton of Love” Food Drive, and the Sovereign Bank Family Skating Center is proud to once again serve as a drop-off location. You can drop off your non-perishable food items at the shopping cart parked by the main entrance gate. Some suggested items include pastas, canned soups, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni & cheese, rice, beans, tuna, canned juices, and cereals - no glass bottles please! All donations will benefit the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center right here in Newport. And just in case the gratification of helping Newport County’s less fortunate isn’t incentive enough, all donors will also receive a FREE hot chocolate to help ward off the winter chill.
Just as the unrelenting winter begins to overstay its welcome, along comes the Newport Winter Festival to remind us exactly why we fell in love with winter in the first place. From February 12-21, the city breaks out into seasonal celebration with over 150 individual events and a spate of special discounts, live performances, concerts, fairs, contests, games, exhibits, and all manner of seasonal frivolity, sprawling throughout town. Purchase a Winter Festival button and receive discounts to countless events, restaurants and retailers throughout our fair city. You can even show your Winter Festival button at the Sovereign Bank Family Skating Center and receive $2 OFF skating admission!
