2015 Events Rewind: Here’s What RI’s Talking About!
Newport Waterfront Events was proud to bring the waterfront alive with an exciting 2015 line-up! We hope you were there, but if not here’s what you missed!
THE 6TH ANNUAL WATERFRONT REGGAE FESTIVAL
Thanks to all who joined us at our new waterfront location, India Point Park on the Providence Waterfront, for ten hours of live Reggae, Roots, and Dancehall.
THE J. GEILS BAND
The J. Geils Band started as an acoustic blues trio in the mid 1960s with singer and guitarist John Geils, bassist Danny Klein (Dr. Funk) and harmonica player Richard “Magic Dick” Salwitz.
The band formed under the name ‘Snoopy and the Sopwith Camels’, while Geils was attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a couple of semesters. In 1967, the band switched focus, starting to play electric guitar and bass and recruiting drummer Stephen Jo Bladd and fast-talking ex-disc jockey singer Peter Wolf, born Peter Blankenfeld, both from Boston. They became the J. Geils Blues Band, later dropping the word “Blues” from the band name. The following year, former fan Seth Justman joined as an organist. The group signed to Atlantic Records in 1970.
Although living in Boston, the band had always considered Detroit their second home because of their enormous popularity there. Two of their three live albums were recorded in Detroit at various venues. The third live album was recorded in Detroit and Boston.
FESTIVAL LATINO DE PROVIDENCE/LATINO MUSIC FESTIVAL

Scheduled for Sunday, September 6th, Labor Day Weekend this multi-cultural experience serves up Latin cuisine, libations and a waterfront dance floor with Latino sensations Sergio Vargas and Fefita La Grande, with other artists to be announced!
THE 23RD ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL OKTOBERFEST!
Oktoberfest on the Waterfront – our official sendoff to summer, and salute to the arrival of autumn, has found a new home on the Providence Waterfront at India Point Park! Join us for our annual reunion of friends enjoying the tastes, sights, and sounds of our little Bavaria in Rhode Island. Seasonal brews, and savory German cuisine compliment the lively and spirited sound of music spilling from the Biergartens. PLEASE NOTE, THIS IS A 21+ EVENT.
BIOGRAPHY OF FEFITA LA GRANDE
Fefita La Grande has been one of the most important figures in Dominican music for the past 40 years. A pioneer of merengue tipico (also known as ‘perico ripiao’), Fefita paved the way for countless other Dominican women who dreamed of pursuing a career in music, in an otherwise male dominated scene. Her looks weren’t the only thing that caught the public’s attention: Fefita is a talented singer, songwriter, and most of all, an exceptional accordionist.
FALL WATERFRONT REGGAE CONCERT W/ COLLIE BUDDZ & THE RAVERS!
Light It Up, the new record from artist Collie Buddz, is momentous, gigantic and booming! It’s immediately undeniable an awe-struck song complete with an unforgettable sing-along hook, the kind of beats that pound in the chest and a vocal performance that’s as uncommon as it is infectious.
A hit record is probably the only thing that makes Salaam Remi pause his day. Remi, most known as one of the top-selling music producers in the world [Fugees, Usher, Fergie, and Amy Winehouse] and Executive Vice-President at Sony Music knows an irrefutable song when he hears it. After discovering Light It Up, Remi made an offer to Collie Buddz to join his label imprint Louder Than Life, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.
